When Manuel I the Fortunate, king of Portugal, visited the Palace of the Alhambra, he was captivated by the imposing beauty of the decoration, formed by ceramic tiles of Arab origin which they called "azulejos". Still fascinated by the splendor of the interior of the Alhambra, on his return to Portugal he immediately ordered that the walls of his palace in Évora be decorated in the same way.
