What is this book?

Improv Techniques for Role Playing started as a one-day improv workshop at EndGame, a hobby shop in Oakland, California. The goal was to share improv with the local RPG community to demonstrate how many of the improv techniques can be applied to the game.

We have selected exercises specially designed for players, to practice and motivate creativity in their playgroups, the creation of dynamic characters and effective and enthusiastic collaboration - "Yes, and also" being one of the pillars of our hobby.

We are soon adding Improv Techniques for Game Directors, which emphasizes how to direct scenes, distribute the limelight, and strike a balance between setting and narrative.

Not long after, we developed Improv Techniques for Live Role Players, which explored the switch between high and low status, relationship development, and no-props acting.

Improvisation Techniques for Role Playing is a book that compiles all the experience of years of conducting improvisation workshops, techniques and useful tips for tabletop role players, live role players and game directors.

How to use this book?

We've collected our favorite exercises from the workshops and grouped them by general skill categories. Each chapter begins with light exercises and progresses to more challenging exercises.

To start you can choose some exercises that interest you. So depending on what you want to work on — be it general role-playing, or something more specific to game management or live role-playing — you will find different sections more or less relevant to your interests.
