"Forget about your training. Forget about your armor, your weapons and the fact that your best men were trained by their worst. Just remember one thing, dear cousin; when the Steel Legion moves, the kings fall." - Duke Anghelus, currently King Anghelus I of Munlin

After the death of Otto IV, there were six imperial legions: the Gilded Legion, the Steel Legion, the Adamantine Legion, the Legion of Ash, the Legion of Smoke and the Argent Legion. In the subsequent chaos, all but two of these were dissolved by order of the Imperial Conclave. The only remains left today of these institutions that were once powerful are the War Colleges in Argem.

The survival of the Gilded Legion was assured by its critical role in safeguarding the sovereignty and independence of the Imperial Mint. The Steel Legion, on the other hand, survived by the simple fact of its refusal to dissolve. They camped in the fields of Klaean in Argem and launched an ultimatum: they would only respond to the emperor. Until an emperor sat on the Hollow Throne, they would serve the empire. Despite the threats and convictions of the members of the Conclave, none was foolish enough to challenge their position. Before things got older, the Conclave agreed to establish the Office of the Imperial Chamberlain and the Steel Legion has guaranteed the sanctity of Argem, the Imperial Capital and the Office of the Imperial Chamberlain.

The Steel Legion is one of the oldest combat forces in the Tellian Empire. They took their name from the legendary legions of the old Domain and trace their origins to the first professional armies deployed by the emperor, only orders can claim a more glorious or more historical past. When the Steel Legion assumed the role of custodians of the empire and guarantors of the chamberlain, they abandoned their traditional armament and armed themselves with large swords, traditionally the ceremonial weapon of the Adamantine Legion, the missing bodyguards of the emperors. With this act, the Steel Legion became the last surviving link between the glorious military history of the Armatellum dynasty and today's Hundred Kingdoms.

In the absence of an emperor, the Steel Legion is the most prosperous and powerful mercenary company in the empire. They sell their services widely, but only to those families who are waging war outside the empire or who have a casus belli recognized by the Imperial Conclave. His wealth is complemented by a permanent contract with the imperial chamberlain office to protect Argem from all aggressors. The nobles see this contract as little more than an artifice, a mechanism for the Chamberlain Office to support one of the strongest and strongest allies of the imperial mandate behind an appearance of neutrality. To this day, no noble house has been willing to directly challenge the Steel Legion for this or any other reason.
