What is the Templar Cross in the context of wargames?

The Templar Cross is a symbol associated with the Knights Templar, a medieval Christian military order. It usually displays a red cross on a white background, symbolizing their commitment to Christianity and their willingness to sacrifice.

This symbol is often used on the shields, banners, and armor of miniatures representing knightly orders or religious armies in tabletop games. It represents devotion to a sacred cause and is used to add a historical or thematic element to forces in battle.

What does the Templar Cross symbolize in Warhammer® and other wargames?

It symbolizes faith and sacrifice on the battlefield. In the Warhammer® universe, it can inspire stories of knightly armies, crusades, and spiritual struggles. It is also used to represent characters or units dedicated to a divine or sacred mission.

In Warhammer®, it signifies unwavering loyalty and devotion to a higher cause. It can represent forces dedicated to fighting Chaos or protecting humanity, adding an epic and thematic backdrop to narrative campaigns and battles.

In the Warhammer® universe, several factions use them, especially in Warhammer 40,000®:

  1. The Black Templars: The most prominent faction for using this type of symbol. They are a chapter of zealous Space Marines, heavily inspired by medieval crusaders. They display them on their armor, shields, and banners, and their entire history revolves around an eternal crusade in the Emperor's name. These are the most iconic factions associated with them, but other Imperial factions may also use similar religious symbols to emphasize their devotion and militant faith.
  2. Adepta Sororitas® (Sisters of Battle): Although they do not use them Specifically, the Sisters of Battle incorporate extensive religious and crusader-type imagery. Their armor, vehicles, and relics often feature various forms of crosses, iconography, and symbols of faith that reflect the spirit of holy warriors.
  3. Imperial Knights: Some Imperial Knights feature heraldry and symbology reminiscent of the Knights Templar, including cross-shaped designs and banners. These noble war machines can be customized to align with a crusader and knightly theme, depending on the traditions of the Knight House.
  4. Crusader Squadrons: Specific Black Templar units, such as Crusader Squadrons, further emphasize the Templar aesthetic, with prominent cross-shaped emblems as part of their identity and weaponry.
