Jorvik

For decades at the time of the great raids, much of England was occupied by the fearsome Northmen. One of the largest cities under his control became a flourishing point of trade and crafts. The Vikings called the city and surrounding territory the Kingdom of Jórvík. Today, it is the city of York.

In Jórvík you will assume the role of Jarls (members of the nobility), whose objective is to obtain victory points by trading different types of goods, organizing great feasts, carrying looting and providing your artisans with the resources they request. On the other hand, you must be prepared to repel the Picts' attacks against the Kingdom of Jórvík!

During 4 seasons, players will go through 4 phases until the game ends. Each deck contains a series of predefined cards, so that in each season the same ones will always appear, but in random order. Each player must first place their Vikings on the lines of interest for each card that interests them. Once all the players have placed all their Vikings, a peculiar auction will be held to buy each card: the purchase price will depend on the total number of Vikings in a line of interest. When it's your turn to decide, you must evaluate very well if that card compensates the cost it has at that moment, or give up its purchase. Money is very tight in the game and a bad decision can hinder your strategy.

Choose from ship cards, raids, artisans, merchants, skalds and many others with unique abilities to get the most points of possible victory and rise with the victory. Beware of the Picts too: once per season, they will attack the Kingdom of Jórvík, and the player with the fewest defense points on their warrior cards will lose victory points.

Stefan Feld's Jórvík features a unique mechanism to acquire the different playing cards: in successive rounds, players must place their Vikings on the cards that may interest them. Each Viking in a card's row will increase its cost. When the acquisition of each card is resolved, you must assess whether it is worth waiting for its price to drop; but if you wait too long when acquiring it, it is possible that another player keeps it. In Jarl mode, there will also be more cards available that you can reserve, but again, their cost will depend on the total number of reserved cards remaining.

This edition includes 2 game modes: Karl mode, ideal to learn how to play, and the Jarl mode, much more competitive and with a greater variety of cards to define your strategy.
