The Hungry are light combat operatives. Both Gakis and Pretas are most likely trained with a test-reward system, which EI facilitates by artificially stimulating their hunger pangs. Hence their military designation within the Combined Army as "the Hungry". Humans met them in Paradiso, where they were given the code name Gakis and Pretas – the name for cannibal ghosts in Japanese and Hindi – due to the ferocity of their attacks and because they like to move in packs.
