You are the last of the Firelights, and you must return the light to the six beacons of the land of Penumbra. A solo role-playing game of exploration, discovery, and challenges inspired by Metroidvania-style video games.

For generations, the dead have been trapped in their undead form throughout the land of Penumbra, haunting and ravaging our world. The Firelights, anthropomorphic beings who once guided the dead through the Veil, have vanished. However, there is one last hope...

A new cocoon has just hatched under the watchful eyes of the Protectors. You are the last of the Firelights. You must fight your way through swarms of lifeless creatures, return the light to the beacons of Penumbra, and guide the dead through the Veil once more.

Your goal is to reignite the six beacons of the land of Penumbra, defeat the Curses, and allow the dead, trapped as undead, to cross the Veil once more. To do this, you will explore the lands of Penumbra, searching for the beacons and confronting the Curses that stand in your way.

Your character has three abilities, called styles here, which refer to how you approach situations (energetic, patient, and quick). To determine and interpret the outcome of your intended action or the information you need, you must reveal two cards from the adventure deck, then roll 2d6 action numbers and add (in most cases) the value of the style you are using for the action, or the modifier indicated. The outcome is measured in terms of Light (if the result is greater than the sum of the values ​​of both cards), Penumbra (if the result is greater than the value of one of the cards), and Darkness (if it is less than both cards), and depending on the action, it will have different triggers.

The map of the Penumbra lands will be formed using the cards from the adventure deck. At the beginning, you draw a card; this is your first location, a specific region. Using the generator tables, you can bring this region to life and begin taking actions to explore it. Each new card you place on the map, following specific rules, is considered a new region to explore. If the card you draw is a face card (J, Q, or K), there will be one of the six beacons that you must light.

Follow your instincts and take actions (face risks, search for treasures, discover new regions, fight against Curses, etc.) to discover what each region holds. And keep a record of your adventure. On one hand, jot down information about each region on a sticky note on the card, and on the other, write an entry in your travel journal for each card/region you explore. You have a very brief oracle and generator tables to inspire you.

To play, you need: a poker deck (adventure deck), 2d6 (action dice), and a notebook (travel journal). Firelights is a solo role-playing game about a journey through a desolate world. The gameplay experience is reminiscent of classic Metroidvania action-adventure video games. The system is minimalist, elegant, and flows naturally, and the setting provides subtle hints that allow each player to delve deeper into the elements they wish. You will face challenges, avoid dangers, explore and create a world map, fight shadowy enemies, discover treasures, and much more.
