When Hugo heard the sound of the horses' hooves, he realized that he didn't have many more options. He quickly lowered the bucket a good distance down the shaft of the village well and tied the rope to a support beam of the canopy. Shortly before the first horsemen rushed onto the village square, Hugo swung himself over the stone ring and let himself down on the rope. Now he was standing with one foot in the pail of the village well and somehow it seemed to him as if he were also standing with one foot in the grave...
