Fleeing from the Slyrah, Hugo hid in an alcove he found in a long corridor of the catacombs. The torches in the hall cast black shadows in the alcove into which he pressed himself as flat as possible. He scarcely dared to breathe for fear of giving away his whereabouts. Suddenly he thought he heard the rushing of water and pressed his ear as close as possible to the corridor wall. Indeed! There must be running water behind the wall! Maybe he would find a way there, because the water might be able to guide him outside. After it had remained quiet in his corridor, Hugo wanted to continue his search for an exit from the vault with a torch. He was about to remove one of the torches from its holder next to the niche when he accidentally bent it down. Hugo's heart almost stopped when the back wall of his alcove swung open to reveal a waterfall plunging into a pond in front of the secret door. Blinded by the sunlight, Hugo realized he was saved!
