In Pax Hispanica, you play the role of a Spanish, English, French, Dutch entrepreneur, or simply a stateless person, with the goal of becoming a famous merchant, emancipator, or Caribbean pirate. We are in the 17th century. The Spanish Empire dominates half the world, the Inquisition hunts down dissidents, trade and smuggling are at their peak, and no nation is spared from the pillage and raids of pirates that will end up becoming legends.

Every year, you must sail the seas transporting legal goods, building a lucrative business based on smuggling, plundering towns, or raiding ships from other nations to seize their wealth. The world is at war. European powers fight for every inch of land, offering endless opportunities for someone like you.

With its historical theme and asymmetrical gameplay, Pax Hispanica challenges you to make strategic decisions that will shape your destiny. Combat, betrayal, and temporary alliances with your rivals will be key tools on your path to success. There are many strategic decisions to make: acquiring cards on the market, building and developing colonies, missions, and fleets, fighting at sea or on land, outdoing your opponents in battle or duel, and at the same time making sure your name resonates in eternity through the recognition log.

What is Pax Hispanica?

The game is played in four-year cycles: goods, auction, play, and sailing.

Year of goods

The order of the players is updated and the colonies produce goods (chests), as long as they have manpower. Some events can affect production, such as malaria.

Year of auction

In this phase, players can participate in auctions, professional raffles, or act as servants. The auctioneer chooses the top visible card from one of the decks, and all players bid secretly. The winner pays the auctioneer (or the banker). If a player is off-center in any profession, he may draw additional cards from that deck based on his range statistic.

Year of Play

Players play their cards, each of which has an icon that determines the movement of their pawn on the philosophy board. This pawn can be exchanged with another player's pawn in the target space or moved to border areas, where it will face mutinies and other crises. Each card offers up to four possible actions, and the player may take as many actions as their influence value allows. There are about 20 different actions in the game, such as founding a colony, establishing a religious mission, upgrading it to reduction, obtaining ships or noble titles, carrying out the Spanish Inquisition, or practicing voodoo.

Year of Sailing

Players can move their fleets across the map. Each ship has a specific purpose, such as raiding or privateering, which defines its available actions. Ships can transport chests or citizens, pick up goods at allied ports, or smuggle them from other ports. Some fleets may attack and destroy colonies if their strength is sufficient.

As fleets advance, other players with a presence in a pirate space may reveal a lair card to initiate a naval battle. Each player chooses one of their four battle cards, thus determining the outcome of the engagement. If a fleet manages to reach Europe, the transported chests are converted into gold or can be given to the crown.

The player can win immediately if he reaches the last space on the philosophy board and fulfills the specific requirements of that position, such as possessing three colonies and two citizens, abolishing slavery, obtaining two noble titles, or collecting relics.
