Saigon 75 is a board game that places two players in the midst of the conflict between South and North Vietnam, from the summer of 1973 to the spring of 1975. Each turn represents a three-month season, and the game is played on a map with pieces representing divisions or detached divisions, as well as battalions of Rangers, Marines, Viet Cong, Paratroopers, and river patrols.
1972. Richard Nixon fulfills his promise to reduce the US military involvement in Vietnam and withdraws more than 400,000 Marines, reducing weekly American casualties to fewer than 10. Exploring new diplomatic avenues with the USSR and China, Vietnam ceases to be a priority for Congressional funding, as the reduced presence of American troops weakens the argument of "supporting our boys on the battlefield."
During 1972, the U.S. conducted an active bombing campaign against strategic targets in North Vietnam, as well as mining its ports to cripple its economy. The Air Force also provided support to South Vietnamese forces in combat, while the military presence on the ground was reduced to advisory roles.
In 1973, Nixon announced the cessation of all military operations in Vietnam, including naval and air bombardments.
On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell after the hasty evacuation of Americans by helicopter.
Can you rewrite history?
Saigon 75 uses a card-based system in which each player must play a card from their hand at the start of their turn.
The event always occurs and benefits one of the two players. This forces you to decide when to play the cards in your hand, as some benefit your opponent.
Unlike typical CDGs, the cards don't grant operation points, nor do they allow you to opt out of playing the event. With at least three cards in hand, you must choose the lesser evil if they favor the opposing faction, or the optimal moment to play them if they are your own event.
Saigon 75's gameplay is simple, allowing strategy and fun to take center stage, with intuitive rules that let you manage game situations without consulting tables.
Saigon 75 features a solo mode using a specific deck of cards that indicate the automa's priorities each turn.
In this way, the automa will search its hand for an event of the color indicated on the card, move to attack or reinforce in the provinces indicated, and attack according to the card's instructions.
With simple instructions and minimal rule changes, the game effectively creates an opponent that plays as North Vietnam.
