Land and Freedom: The Spanish Revolution and Civil War
Complete Spanish Edition, LIMITED COPIES.
July 17, 1936 - A coup d'état has just erupted to overthrow the Republic. A coalition of fascist groups, led by right-wing military officers, is secretly coordinating to establish a dictatorship. Just five months ago, the Popular Front, which includes liberals, socialists, and communists, won the general elections and took control of the republican government. Inspired by Italy and Germany, the Spanish fascists are determined to destroy this left-wing democracy before it can implement genuine reforms.
Meanwhile, masses of oppressed Spanish peasants are seizing the land and cultivating it collectively, and thousands of worker cooperatives are being organized in the cities to self-manage Spanish industry as employers flee to the fascist side. Some two million of these workers and peasants are represented by the anarcho-syndicalist CNT, the country's largest union. But this growing freedom and collectivization also pose a threat to the Republican government, which desperately needs to appease its potential foreign allies, the capitalist powers of Great Britain, France, and the United States.
In the aftermath of the Great Depression, and following years of strikes, repression, and killings—between left and right, rich and poor, Catholics and atheists—Spain plunges into revolution and civil war.
Led by Generals Sanjurjo and Mola, fascist conspirators have seized control of half the nation's army and navy, including all the elite forces of the Army of Africa. To avert total collapse, the Republic is forced to distribute weapons to the revolutionary CNT and the more reformist UGT union. These militias, along with the remaining Republican army, managed to thwart the officers' coup in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, but other key cities like Seville, Valladolid, and Zaragoza fell to the rebels. Now, roughly a third of peninsular Spain was in Nationalist hands, and thousands of people caught on the wrong side of the front line were hunted down and executed. To survive, many went underground as guerrillas to continue the fight behind enemy lines.
With Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Communist Russia sending troops and weapons to escalate the conflict, and the whole world watching closely, could the Spanish Civil War be the first act of another great World War, or would the workers of Spain achieve true self-determination?
Land and Liberty: The Spanish Revolution and Civil War is a card-driven game in which players grapple with the dilemma of balancing the fragile alliance between anarchists, communists, and moderates with their own political and revolutionary ideals. You must repel the fascist attack on all four fronts while gaining initiative through cadre building, deck management, and the powerful Medallions.
If the war is won, the player with the most Glory wins the game and determines the future of Spain. If the war against the fascists is lost... 40 years of dictatorship await, with death, imprisonment, or exile as the only options.
