The year is 1882 and the Old Ones are here, they arrived seven hundred years ago and have ruled the planet ever since. Most people just go on with their lives, accepting their monstrous rulers. However, a growing group of revolutionaries has set out to free humanity from slavery. These freedom fighters have called themselves Restorationists. A secret war has broken out between the Restorationists and forces loyal to the Ancient Ones. The invention of dynamite has changed the balance of power and now a lone assassin has the ability to destroy an Ancient One. In this shadowy world of assassins, informers, police officers, and anarchists, no one is sure who is who or on which side they are fighting.

The worlds of Lovecraft and Sherlock Holmes collide in the groundbreaking 19th century. With the Ancient Ones ruling the land, two sides will clash to overthrow their evil rulers or support their cause.

You will start the game with your own starting deck from which you will draw five cards that will allow you to perform a series of actions, many of them consisting of placing and removing influence cubes. Influence is the means through which you can get new cards for your deck. As you deplete your deck of cards, you'll reshuffle it, so you'll play the same cards several times during the game, leaving your strategy largely tied to the cards you get. Some will give you additional agents, while others will allow you to use special actions. You must be careful not to reveal your secret identity too quickly to avoid becoming a target for your opponents.

At the end of the game the players will reveal their secret identities to check which side they are on. the one they were fighting. Restorationists and Loyalists score differently, and the player with the fewest victory points will seriously handicap all players on his side. Therefore, you must make an effort to identify the side of each player to avoid the loss of final points due to the incompetence of one of your allies. Despite being able to benefit from some actions of other players on your side, only the player with the most victory points at the end of the game will be the winner.

Hidden roles, assassinations, betrayals and struggles for controlling the cities go hand in hand in the new edition.
