Cytosis puts you inside a cell, in charge of the processes taking place within it. Does Cytosis successfully translate cell biology to a board game, or is there a mutation that spoils the process?

Cytosis is a worker placement game that takes place inside a human cell. Players begin the game with a number of flasks at their disposal, and on their turn, they place one of their flasks in any available location within the cell. Some locations provide players with resources (e.g., mRNA, ATP), and others provide actions (e.g., converting resources or purchasing cards). Resources will be used to build enzymes, hormones, and/or receptors, which will allow you to gain health points. The player with the most health points at the end of the game wins.

The action spaces allow you to acquire and convert resources, gain an extra action per turn, gain energy, perform protein synthesis, and choose new Cell Component cards. In the game, the resources you work with are the macromolecules used in cells (lipids, proteins, mRNA, and carbohydrates) and the energy required to perform these processes (ATP). Synthesizing hormones and receptors is one way to earn points. The main way to score points is by completing Cell Component cards. Enzyme synthesis cards can be completed in a single step by exchanging proteins, carbohydrates, and energy to complete the card and earn points, with bonus points awarded for producing different types of enzymes.

Steroids, protein hormones, and receptors have a three-step process that unfolds over several turns (since each step has its own action), starting with the endoplasmic reticulum, moving through the Golgi apparatus, and ending with exocytosis (just as it actually occurs in cells). Each card has a specific number of macromolecules and the amount of energy needed to fulfill its completion requirements, and only after completing all three steps does the card provide the valuable health points. Once all players have placed their flasks and performed their actions, an event card is activated that affects the next round by increasing the number of a specific resource produced, reducing the costs of cellular component cards, or forcing players to discard stored resources. Event cards also act as a timer, and the game ends when all event cards are used up.

The final score includes bonus points for collecting enzyme sets and for objective cards that players can choose to acquire during the game, providing bonus points for a specific type of completed cell component card. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
