Malifaux 2E: Ten Thunders - Komainu (2)

Important buildings in the Three Kingdoms often have a pair of large stone or iron creatures flanking their entrances. Sometimes standing almost aws tall as a man, these beasts typically look like a cross between lion and dog. Traditionally, these imposing statues were believed to ward off evil. In truth, they serve as anchors for a clan or temples guardian spirits.

In times of desperate need, the spirits will inhabit the Komainu to defend their charges. With the grinding sound of stone and metal, the hulking beasts step down from their plinths, tracking their prey by its spirit-scent. When the Kingdoms go to war, it is not unheard of for the Komainu to accompany their clan, becoming even more aggressive when their charges are in danger.

A fusion of the spirit world with inanimate mechanisms, Komainu are very difficult to destroy and just as dangerous. It is said that a Komainus bite not only tears the flesh, but also the soul, and wise men avoid the jaws of the Komainu at all costs.
