In the Tobago board game we will put ourselves in the shoes of ambitious treasure hunters in search of the lost coins, which are scattered all over the island. But... Where? The clues will tell us.
We will have two different types of cards: treasure cards and clue cards: The clue cards will help us to determine where the treasure is; the treasure cards can be good or horrible skulls that will cast a curse on us that will make us flee quickly, losing part of our treasures along the way.
First we will place the board, which is set up in puzzle mode. The board is different on both sides, so we can combine it as we wish and we will have different islands.
We will be involved in the search for 4 different treasures, each one will have its own clues and they will be represented by the cubes of a color. The search for a treasure is independent of the others. If it happens that 2 treasures are in the same square, it is better for the person who goes for that treasure than to take 2 for a trip.
Once the board is set up, we will randomly place moais, huts, palm trees and our 4x4. And we will draw 4 clue cards (one for each treasure). We will place the amulets and give each player 6 cards. We will draw 12 treasure cards, shuffle the two curses among the remaining cards and put these 12 cards at the top of the deck.
The moais will mark the location of the amulets. The amulets are placed in the last square before the sea in the direction that the moai is located.
Amulets are tokens that allow us to:
- Remove a treasure location marker
- Play one more clue card
- Move the 4x4 again
- Exchange clue cards
- Free yourself from the curse of the ugly evil skull.
On their turn, a player can:
- Place a clue card in any of the different treasure hunts, always making sure that there are no contradictions in the search. That is, if the treasure is in the largest lake, it cannot also be in the mountain. If there is any contradiction, you cannot put the card in that search.
The clue cards contain locations where the treasure will be, or where it will not be. This will allow us to delimit the location of the treasure. When we see that we can already place all the cubes corresponding to a treasure, it is best to put it since its mission is to help you locate the treasure, so that you do not contradict the clues that already exist, etc.
When you place a clue card, you place one of your compass roses on top of it to indicate that the clue is yours.
- Move your 4×4. The 4×4 can move a maximum of 3 sections: a section is an area of the same type of terrain, for example, a mountain, a lake, etc. or borders.
The 4×4 can move anywhere except the sea, but it can move through rivers and lakes.
- Exchange clue cards. You can discard your entire hand and draw the same number of cards again. And that's the end of your turn.
- Collecting treasures or amulets, and using amulets, do not count as actions. If during your journey with the 4×4 you find 2 treasures, you take both treasures.
We always have to have 6 clue cards in our hand, so at the end of our turn we will refill our hand if necessary until we have 6 cards.
Once we have the exact location of our treasure (a single cube of that colour) we can move with our 4x4 and take the treasure, if the opponents don't get there first. The person who collects the treasure places a compass rose at the end and we start to hand out treasures. We take as many treasure cards as there are compass roses and we give as many cards as there are compass roses of their colour to each of the players so they can look at them and know what's there, but we can't comment. The objective of this is to be able to escape as soon as possible if we see a curse or to try to get those 6 coins we've seen. Then, we add one more and shuffle and start bidding. We draw a treasure card and starting in reverse order (we start with the person who found the treasure and we go up the tracks) we bid that card. The player can decide to pass, or keep the card. If they pass, it is offered to the next player; if they keep it, they remove their compass rose. A new card is drawn and offered again in the same way.
If a curse appears during the distribution of the treasure, all players who still have a compass rose must either discard an amulet or their highest treasure card. And the distribution is over, the cards that were left to be dealt are discarded.
Once the treasure has been distributed, we move the moai 60 degrees (the pieces are hexagonal, so to the next side) and place the new amulets in their location. If there was already an amulet, no more is placed. The player who took the treasure places a new clue to start a new search for that treasure and places his compass rose.
