Players start the game with 5 cards in their hand. Each turn, they place a card on the discard pile in the center of the table. The number or color must match the card in the discard pile. The game ends when someone runs out of cards in their hand. However, in Match! What players are most interested in is not placing their cards in the discard pile, but in a collection of cards in front of them. At the end of the game, these cards are what score points.

A player can only place a card in their collection if it doesn't fit in the discard pile. Furthermore, when they place a card in their collection, they must draw a new card from the deck. This means that even if they accumulate points, they also move further away from the end of the game. On the other hand, if a card in their collection matches one in the discard pile when their turn comes around again, they won't be able to play a card from their hand to add it to their collection, so they either discard a matching card or discard the card from their collection that meets the requirements.
