Ouch! is a card game created by Romain Caterdjian and Théo Rivière and illustrated by Fran Collado. Recommended for ages five and up, 2 to 5 players can participate in games lasting about ten minutes. Players compete to collect the largest and most varied cactus flowers, avoiding the sharp spikes.

Learning the rules won't take more than 10 minutes. To start playing, shuffle the 44 cactus cards and place them in the center of the table. Draw six cards from the deck and line them up, back to back. These are the cacti you have at your disposal as you explore the desert. The more flowers the back shows, the greater the reward, but the more dangerous it is to obtain them!

The youngest player is the first to try to collect the prized desert flowers. Choose any of the six cards in the center of the table, holding it by one of its four sides. Decide whether to turn it over on the left, right, top, or bottom side. If the chosen side shows a cactus... Ouch! You pricked yourself and couldn't pick the flower; leave the card in the box. Otherwise, keep the card in your play area. Then, fill the row of cards so that there are always six available.

The game proceeds in turns clockwise, with each player repeating this same sequence. Among the cactus cards are also hidden desert animals, which add special effects to the game. If you reveal a card with an animal on it and you haven't pricked yourself on the cactus's spines, you can benefit from its powers! On the one hand, there are the hissing vipers: once obtained, if the next player pricked themselves on a spine, they must give you the card instead of returning it to the box. On the other hand, the fennec, the desert fox, allows you, if you wish, to take a second turn in a row. However, if you prick yourself on this extra turn, you'll also lose the fennec card!

One last thing to keep in mind while exploring the desert is that not all flowers are created equal... If you prick yourself on a cactus card that has a red flower, in addition to discarding it, you must lose a second card of your choice from your stockpile. However, all risk is rewardless: at the end of the game, the player with the most red flowers earns 5 additional points.

When a player has drawn eight cards or when the center pile runs out, the game ends. To determine the winner, add one point for each flower collected, the five-point bonus for the player(s) with the most red flowers, and a final wild bouquet bonus: four additional points for each set of four different-colored flowers you have. Whoever scores the most points wins!

Ouch! It's designed to be played with the little ones in the house. If necessary, you can adjust the difficulty and waive some rules, such as the desert animal rule or the red flower penalty. Go on an expedition and return with the most colorful bouquets!
