The Portuguese canning industry developed throughout the 20th century, experiencing periods of great splendor and extraordinary importance in the social fabric of the communities near the fishing centers. After the enormous growth due to the immense supply of troops to Europe brought by World War II, the industry went through a period of stability with the consolidation of product quality and the establishment of markets abroad. "Lata" ("tin can" in Spanish) is the name of the raw material used for the containers in which fish are packaged, and it also became a popular name for the product. In this game, players manage local canning companies in the 1950s and produce and sell the famous canned sardines or canned mackerel, the two main canned fish in the early decades of the industry, before the emergence of the popular tuna. The player with the most victory points (VPs), which are awarded at the end of the game using score cards, wins.
