Tuareg

Tuareg is a two-player board game originally released in 2012, in which players take on the role of rival chiefs, vying for the best trade deals as salt, pepper, or dates change hands. It is a famous design by creator Andreas Steiger, illustrated by the artist couple Taira Akitsu (Palastgeflüster) and Franz Vohwinkel (Puerto Rico or Dominion: Intrigue). Tuareg poses games for two players with an approximate duration of 60 minutes.

The main mechanics of Tuareg works through an original system of placing workers, with which each player will try to get the most resources and enclaves for their tribe of nomads. To form the game board, we distinguish three types of cards: Border cards, Tribe cards, and Goods cards. A 5x5 card square board is built, where 16 are Edge cards. This type of card contains some fixed actions that are available throughout the game. The rest, the remaining 9 slots, are filled with Tribe (5) and Goods (4) cards. These cards, once they are used, are removed from the board and replaced with new ones of the same type, placed in a pile outside the board.

There are two types of tokens that each player has: Tuareg tokens that can only be placed on the edge, and Tribe tokens, which can be placed on the rest of the cards, never on the edge. It is the Tuareg counters that mark, by drawing perpendicular lines, where the Tribe counters can be placed. This is why it is so important how we place the initial tiles! There is a third type of token, called the Assailant, where not only will it move marking the course of the game and triggering its end, but it will block squares and make players have to pay a number of goods when they reach the corners.

Tuareg is one of the best games for two players, since it offers games with a high component of tension. And it is that we are going to play a maximum of twelve rounds, in which we are going to have, at most, five actions in each of them. The challenge is simple, although very complicated to optimize: knowing how to take advantage of each of these five or four actions (if we put two Tuaregs facing each other) in the best possible way. We must develop properly and better than our rival, entering into a direct struggle to get the Tribe cards. Can you become the best Tuareg, the most prosperous trader in the desert?
