Players familiar with Maracaibo will recognize some concepts from the original. However, it's not necessary to know the original at all, so new players will be able to enjoy it without any problems.

In fact, Pirates of Maracaibo has been designed as a standalone game with even more accessible rules.

The game consists of three rounds; Sail the Caribbean, hire crew, join forces with other ships, explore the coast, amass a great fortune, and retire to a remote island enjoying the fame of being the most respected pirate in history.
