In Great Western Trail – La Gran Ruta del Oeste, you will have to direct your cattle to Kansas City to send them by rail to other cities. You'll start the game with a deck of low-value cattle cards, and every time you get to Kansas, you'll have to sell it. But be careful, only those cattle cards of different species will be used to determine the total value of your merchandise; the higher the market value, the more and better cities will be willing to buy it, and the more money and victory points you will receive.

On your turn, move your cowboy along the route that connects Texas to Kansas City - which route you choose is up to you. Once you have reached a location, you will be able to perform various actions: whether it is a neutral building or one of your own buildings, you will be able to perform local actions, very advantageous to your cause. Among them, you can sell part of your cattle to earn money, improve your locomotive to save costs when shipping cattle from Kansas, hire staff to help you with your task, buy better specimens in the cattle market to increase the value of your herd and a long etc

Once you have performed your action(s), you will replenish your hand with new won cards from your deck and it will be the next player's turn.

On your way, you will have to face constant dilemmas: it is preferable that you use the neutral buildings or buildings of your color that you will find along the way, but sometimes, you will have no choice but to settle for auxiliary actions, which are much less efficient. The rest of the players will not make it easy for you. They will try to build their own buildings in the best positions, often forcing you to pay a fee if you pass through them. Luckily, The Great Western Route offers various paths to travel. Some are longer than others and full of risks that will slow down your progress, but they cross through spaces where putting one of your buildings will be very advantageous, since they add extra actions to the actions provided by the building.

Throughout the game, you will be able to acquire objective cards that grant you powerful unique one-time actions, but beware, accepting one of these tasks means that, if you have not fulfilled its requirements at the end of the game, you will lose victory points. . You will also have to improve your own player board, removing discs from the spaces you prefer to enhance various abilities: you will be able to unlock new auxiliary actions, improve your cowboy's movement, increase your maximum capacity of certificates or increase your hand limit.
