"Roads to Stalingrad" is the first volume of the ?Campaign Commander? and it reflects the campaign in southern Russia between the summer of 1942 and the end of the winter of 1943. After the terrible first winter in Russia, the German troops reorganized and prepared to launch an offensive to end the war. Before they were beaten by the Soviets who launched an attack to recapture Kharkov that ended in disaster for the troops involved in it. After putting an end to this offensive, the AXIS forces - counting on numerous Hungarian, Romanian and Italian allies - launched, at the beginning of July 1942, the offensive known by the code name "Blue Case". The German advance was overwhelming, reaching the very gates of the Caucasus and the Volga River. In the city of Stalingrad the German army would find the very hell between the months of August and October trying to conquer it. The city would allow the Germans to cut off river traffic on the Volga and became for the Soviets a symbol of their resistance to the invader. Stalin and Hitler sent more and more troops into the cauldron of that destroyed city, setting up one of the most brutal and bloody battles in the history of mankind. The conquest of the city was practically of no use to the Germans since on November 19 the ?Operation Uranus? in which Marshal Zhukov would pocket the German 6th Army in the ruins he had just conquered. Successive Soviet offensives would destroy the Italian, Romanian, and Hungarian armies on the Don River front and force the Germans to evacuate their conquests in the Caucasus, endangering the very survival of German Army Group South. Only the skillful intervention of Erich von Manstein allowed the Germans to stop the Soviet advance and stabilize the front, saving an already catastrophic situation.
The game takes place on an operational scale ? 1:120,000 scale zonal map. Intended for two players, one leads the AXIS forces and the other the SOVIET forces. The game lasts approximately 3-4 hours and uses a double system of tokens/map and cards in its mechanics. Players must use their military forces and resources to gain victory points by eliminating enemy forces and occupying cities on the map. It is not a card engine game, but the cards are used to trigger events, influence battles and get reinforcements and resources to fight on the map.
At the beginning of the game it is summer and the AXIS player will take the Initiative and attack the SOVIET without mercy or rest. The Soviet player must look for the arrival of winter - it is a card that must be played - to stop the advance of the AXIS and defeat it with their own weapons.
Like all the games in this Series, it has a very simple rulebook and is designed to make the games highly interactive, creating a solid and enjoyable gaming experience for those who don't have the time or space to lay down a game. game of greater duration and scope.
The AXIS player must face the historical dilemma: concentrate on taking the Caucasus, Stalingrad or try both at the same time? The SOVIET player will have to be patient and make his enemy overextend, building up forces for a deadly winter offensive.
