The forces of the Night's Watch may be made up of conscripts, criminals and riffraff as varied; however, once they don the black and take their vows, the sworn brothers grow into loyal men dedicated to defending the Wall from incursion. In the heat of battle, the most common of sworn brothers can be relied upon to hold their own against terrifying foes and dish out devastating blows with their mighty mount. Although they lack the specialization of other Night's Watch units, every army needs a backbone. Skilled commanders should avoid being outflanked or surrounded; and instead allow the line of sworn brothers to serve as a haven for other units with more diverse capabilities.
